SkillCon - Home of the Moxie Games on ESPN
Home of the Moxie Games
Sepaktakraw is a gravity-defying, “no-hands” sport in which 3-player teams use martial arts kicks and blocks to spike a ball above a 5-foot-high net. It combines the foot juggling of soccer and the aerial kicks of martial arts with the bump-set-spike strategy of volleyball!
Sepaktakraw, whose meaning literally translates to “kick ball,” has been played in the streets and parks of Southeast Asia for centuries. It is a relatively new phenomenon in the United States, however, brought here by Southeast Asian refugees around the time of the Vietnam War. Today, sepak takraw in the United States is played by Lao, Hmong, Burmese, Karen and Thai people. Traditional customs and sports are kept alive at cultural celebrations which often include well-attended sports tournaments. Sadly, the sport of sepak takraw remains nearly invisible to the general public and media.
Things are about to change!
In addition to hosting a tournament with participating teams from all around the USA, some of the top players will hold clinics to teach the game to SkillCon attendees, as well as advanced workshops for tournament level players. This will be more than a takraw event. It will be a party! Come celebrate your love of Sepak takraw and enjoy some action from over a dozen other alternative sports!
