Salzig Sporthocker
“Hocker” is the German word for stool, so the english translation is sport-stooling. The sport originates from Germany but the idea of doing tricks and moves with stools is as old as the stool itself. But normal stools are not made for tricks and moves so they break easily. This was the case up until 2006 when two German brothers majoring in product design created the sporthocker, specifically designed for sport.
They were inspired by a group of guys in the northern city of Kiel who were doing tricks and dancing with homemade stools. Most of which were old Tam Tam stools that had been taped and modified to be more stable.
The Landschütz brothers own a product design company in Germany called Salzig, this is where we get the “Salzig Sporthocker”. The design is almost flawless as the stool is incredibly difficult to break, making the range of tricks and moves only limited to the sportstooler.
Hockern (German word for stooling) is best described as a mixture of rhythmic juggling, breakdancing, board sports (skate, snow, surf) and acrobatics. Also, it makes for a nice piece of furniture to sit or put things on!
There are competitions and events every year in Berlin and Kiel, but the sport is still in it’s infancy and is very easy to learn! Some tricks can take only minutes to learn, while others can take months to years.
