US Open Footbag Net Championships

December 14, 2018 by Jason Garfield

For the second consecutive year, SkillCon will be the venue for the US Open Footbag Net Championships. The 2018 US Open will showcase America's top athletes (and select elite athletes from Europe and Asia) competing in Footbag Net's three premier events (i.e., Singles, Doubles and Mixed).

Footbag net is considered by many to be the world's most difficult foot-only court sport. Combining the basic kicks of "Hacky Sack," the aerial kicking techniques of martial arts, and the strategy of volleyball, competitors use only their feet to kick a small 32-panel ball over a 5-foot high net within the confines of a badminton court.

Check out the action, buy a net footbag, learn the basics, and get some tips from America's top athletes on December 14th (Friday- Prelims Day) and 16th (Sunday- Finals Day) at SkillCon!

Lastly, if you're interested in participating in some 1-on-1 or small group instruction to learn the basics, contact event organizer Jeremy Mirken and ask about a beginner clinic on Saturday the 15th. Thanks, and see you at SkillCon!

US Freestyle Footbag Championships

December 14, 2018 by Jason Garfield

Introduction:

The 2018 US Freestyle Footbag Championships are proud to once again be a part of the Moxie Games SkillCon Convention for the second year in a row. This December at the Rio Hotel and Casino, see the nations best freestyle footbag players perform tricks with gravity defying and breakneck supersonic speed that is so fast pace, you may think your cranial optic nerves have been boondoggled! Spectators will be dazzled at USA’s premier freestyle footbag competition, and newcomers are welcome to come and enjoy this fun and athletic sport.

History:

Since John Stalberger and Mike Marshall invented footbag in Portland, Oregon in 1972, freestyle footbag has grown into a very technical, artistic, and competitive discipline with hundreds of different tricks. Frequently referred to as Hacky Sack (registered trademark for Wham-O’s manufactured product), footbag has been a competitive sport at festivals and tournaments throughout the world every year.

General footbag information for newcomers:

In normal freestyle footbag, also known as “shredding,” players attempt to perform as many tricks in a row displaying variety and execution in their strings. A point system was developed to measure difficulty called the “add” system (or additional degree of difficulty) that includes elements from different categories:

  1. Delay: catching the footbag on any surface of your foot (medial/lateral side of foot, or on the toe)
  2. Dexterity: crossing the plane of motion of the footbag with your leg, or doing a full circle around the footbag with your foot or leg.
  3. Body: when a trick involves a spin, jump, twist, or duck around the footbag.
  4. Cross body: a delay on the opposite side of the body from the leg and foot making the delay.
  5. Paradox: A paradox is a complicated concept when the footbag travels from the setting foot in a cross body delay, the footbag moves across the body, and the setting foot does a dexterity in the same direction as the footbag is moving before a delay is made with the opposite foot from the setting foot.
  6. Unusual surface: a delay where any unusual surface of the body stalls the footbag, excluding any part of the hand or arm distal to the shoulder, and excluding the usual surfaces (toe, medial and lateral aspect of foot)

There are several great websites available for people to learn more about footbag.

-Clubs, events, and additional information: www.footbag.org

-Videos demonstrating basic tricks: http://modified.in/footbag/moveslist/

Description of competition:

Routine Event:

This event demonstrates a single player’s ability to perform freestyle footbag in an artistic and technical manner choreographed to a song, in-under two minutes. The competitor attempts to please the audience with technical execution in concert with the music while impressing judges through presentation, difficulty, variety, and execution. This form of competition also measures a player’s stamina and creativity as they try to go through their whole routine without dropping the footbag once.

Circle Event:

Four players take turns attempting to perform as many tricks and combos in a string as they can without dropping. Once a player drops, their turn is over and they must pass to the next player unless judges and players agree that the drop occurred too early and in this case, the player may receive one retry (or pass back) per turn. The footbag will travel around the circle so each player receives a turn, three turns for each competitor, per round. There are two rounds with a brief intermission in-between. Each round is judged differently, one round for variety and one for density. Variety is measured by a player’s range of tricks and combos while density displays their technical ability to hit difficult combinations of tricks. This is one of the newest and exciting forms of freestyle footbag there is and this thrilling competition should not be missed by anybody in the universe!

Democratizing Practical Memory

In three little words lies the potential to profoundly change the way we approach a lifetime of learning. Imagine learning something—anything—empowered by the certainty that memory retention and recall was no longer a limitation, that it was no longer a factor in the equation.

Learn the 1000 most frequently used words in Italian over a weekend. Remember every new, important business contact you just made at a conference. Pick up a guitar and memorize chords and progressions in a shockingly brief amount of time. Know every one of your top 200 customers, their preferences and recent purchases. Recall every muscle, bone and metabolic pathway as a med student. Perfectly. Every time.

This is the purpose of the World Memory Tournament Federation: to democratize practical memory and empower lifelong learning.

One of the things that make Memory Tournaments so accessible is that the barrier to entry is essentially zero. Our community is founded on a culture of being inclusive and never exclusive. We celebrate individual achievement and at the same time grow together, uplifting the entire community. Diversity enriches our community, providing a vibrant ecosystem that further propels our members with ever-increasing opportunities to grow.

We are open to all skill levels from beginner to Memory Master. Anyone can join our community with absolutely zero experience and in mere minutes see immediate gains in proficiency and experience a sense of achievement. It is this personal journey of attaining mastery that builds confidence and fuels the drive to improve further. There is something special and deeply fulfilling when you watch someone experience memory techniques for the first time, when you see the glint in his eyes and the widening smile that slowly appears as he realizes he is doing something within minutes that he has spent a lifetime convincing himself he could not do.

We built Memory Tournaments so that any participant can compete on equal footing, regardless of his situation. Learning and success is not limited by funding, access to resources, language or location. A child in a grade school in South Africa can best a graduate with an Ivy League education. Two kids on a playground with a pencil and piece of paper can compete with players who train on the latest tablet devices. The power of the mind and the desire to maximize one’s potential is what makes our community special. This is the great equalizer. Our members excel based purely on merit, with unequivocal fairness, bound only by the investment they make in themselves.

Our community comes together around Memory Clubs. A Memory Club is simply a collection of people who have a desire to learn and improve their memory. It is a way for people to connect, to join others in a common endeavor, to support each other and grow together. There is no restrictive definition to what a Memory Club should be, how it should be organized or how it should be run. That is up to its members. It costs nothing to start a Memory Club and nothing to keep it running. All that is needed is the desire to learn. Two people constitute a Memory Club as much as a Memory Club whose members number in the hundreds and thousands. They can meet in person or practice online with members on the other side of the world. All that is needed is two committed individuals. In them resides the power to effect change.

We invite you to join our community, the World Memory Tournament Federation, to experience for yourself what happens when you unlock your potential. Join a Memory Club or start one of your own. Share in the joy of a lifetime of learning and of achieving things previously thought out of reach.

THE 2017 US OPEN FOOTBAG CHAMPIONSHIPS

December 15, 2017 by Jason Garfield

The US Open Footbag Championships are dedicated to showcasing the best the sport of footbag as to offer! Created in 1972 by John Stalberger (Mr. Hacky Sack), footbag has grown to exciting international levels. Once a year players from far and wide journey to this prestigious event to compete for the grand title of US Champion. Within the event competitors square off in two major disciplines; footbag net which is played over a 5 foot net (think volleyball for your feet), and freestyle footbag where players execute stylish combinations of tricks to music (think break dancing with a footbag). This year we're excited to add our creative and colorful event to SkillCon, come watch the greatest players in the world battle it out for the supreme title of US Footbag Champion!

Friday 12/15/17
3pm-Close: Shred/Exhibition Play

Saturday 12/16/17

2 pm: Intermediate Routines
2:30 pm: Open Routines
3:30 pm: Intermediate Circle Competition (One round)
4 pm: Open Circle Competition

Sunday 12/17/17

2 pm: Intermediate Finals Routines
2:30 pm: Open Finals Routines
3:30 pm: Open Circle Competition Finals
4:15 pm Request Competition
5 pm: Awards Ceremony

Routines

This event is designed to showcase a player’s performance ability. Each performer has one minute and thirty seconds to display a choreographed routine to a panel of judges and the spectating crowds. Choosing a song/piece of music the freestyler attempts to mix crowd pleasing entertainment with technical execution while working to keep the footbag from dropping. Whoever puts on the best executed show and drops the least wins, very exciting!

Circle

This head to head competition is as exciting as it gets. Working their way through pools of four players per circle, freestylers compete directly with their counterparts to execute the best combos which will lead them to finals. Each circle has two rounds, variety and density. Variety showcases a player’s range of tricks and combos while density displays their technical ability to hit difficult combos. Check out this thrilling competition where the country’s top players work to outdo one another to be crowned shredder supreme!

Request

Request is a newer elimination style event where players once again battle head to head, this time to execute two trick combos dictated by the judges. It begins with one giant circle of all competitors, each player has three tries to hit the two trick combination requested of them. Those who hit move on to the next round, those who do not are eliminated. The circle grows smaller until only one player remains. Competing this year is Request World Champion Jim Penske, be sure not to miss this one!

No Experience Necessary – you do not need to know how to juggle to enter.

Dodge-Juggle 1 on 5
Five jugglers running and juggling in fear against YOU armed with unlimited dodgeballs – enter for a chance to take them out for valuable prizes.

The dodgeball wielder has one minute to take out the jugglers by destroying their juggling patterns. If the dodgeball wielder is unsuccessful in taking out all of the jugglers, the jugglers who survived earn a point. Dodgeball wielders who take out all 5 jugglers win their match and move on to Isolated Dodge-Juggle 1v1

Isolated Dodge-Juggle 1v1
A 3-club juggler and a dodgeball wielder are positioned on platforms on either side of the competition arena, separated by 50 feet. The dodgeball wielder has 1 minute and unlimited balls to attempt to take out the juggler. Up to two assistants can feed the balls to the dodgeball player.

Dodge-Juggle Protect
Each 5-person team has one five club juggler they have to protect. Everyone else plays dodgeball, taking out the juggler ends the round.
